THE VOLUNTEERS

When volunteering in the shop over the summer I met a lovely young family with two young boys visiting from Bolton and crabbing on the pier for the first time. They bought crabbing equipment from me and needed some help getting started, then they wanted to know where the toilets were and a few other things, which I gladly helped with. The boys had a great time and gave me an update every time they caught a crab and even came running after me as I was leaving to say they’d caught a hermit crab The dad bought a book of raffle tickets in appreciation of my help and they all had a wonderful time, which I’m sure they’ll remember fondly

As a retired “Bangor Lad” I’ve always loved walking the Pier. With time on my hands it’s now nice to be able to support (in a very small way) with its upkeep and day to day running. The “Jewel in Bangor’s Crown” draws visitors from far and wide. Its a pleasure to meet everyone that comes to enjoy a few minutes, a few hours or even a day on the Pier. Also, it’s a pleasure to be involved with such a dedicated group of “Friends”.    

As so much of Bangor has fallen into disrepair it would be a sad loss if the Pier was to go the same way. It is up to us to do our best to help raise funds to preserve what has such historic value, and provides such pleasurable experiences to young and old alike. I enjoy meeting people from all over the world who come to visit and know they have enjoyed their visit.

It is not hard to describe the feeling of helping kids have a good time or even giving them confidence. For many years involved with volunteering in the Sea Cadet Corps because of my naval background. I have seen loads of go onto lead good lives. One is now a Master Mariner and sails the world. It is good that kids are encouraged to play. It is a nice feeling knowing you been part responsible for happy faces.

I volunteer to continue the work that the late Town Clerk George Gibbs did in rescuing the Pier. It would be a shame to lose the Pier after he rescued it many years ago. I enjoy meeting people and explaining the history of the Pier, and the history of Bangor and the locality, plus explaining why I do the work so the Pier will be here for future generations to come.    

This is me in my first shift in the entrance kiosk in 2022. It is my happy place. I love it! My husband got involved as Santa in December. He loved it as much as the children and can't wait for this year to volunteer again.
